    Greinburg

Melissa standing in the arch to the courtyard of the castel Greinburg. The balcony that surrounds the courtyard added the special beautiful flair to the courtyard.

    Melissa swimming

In the afternoon of the second day it got quite hot and a refreshing swim in a lake by the bike trail was just what we needed.

Melissa on the danube bike trail

A beautiful second day of our bike tour.

    Maypole

This Maypole stands in the town square of Linz. During our bike ride we saw a maypole in nearly every town. Melissa was fascinated by them.

    Smell test

Melissa smelling the flowers of a bush. During our bike ride she got picture happy making closeups of various flowers.

    Passau

Claus in front of the castle Veste Niederhaus in Passau. This was taken as we left Passau on our first day of the bike ride along the Danube.

    Rotel Inn

Our room at the Rotel Inn in Passau. These rooms are very economically designed. As one can see the double bed occupies the rear half of the room while in the front a small desk and shelf stands.

    Melissa at the Train Station

After we arrived at the Munich airport we biked to the nearest train station in Freising which is about 10 km from the airport. From there we took the train to Passau. Riding the bike from the airport was quite nice since a beautiful bike path goes most of the way through fields and nature.

    Bikes boxed for airplane flight

Our bikes are ready for the flight to Germany. There we went on a bike ride from Passau to Vienna along the Danube. Bicycles can be taken along on international flights as one of your two luggage pieces. In domestic flights the bicycles do cost extra unlike with international flights. The bike boxes can be purchased at the airport for $10 each but be sure to take packing tape along.

    No room at the inn

Claus trying to find a room for the night. In the background is the abbey Melk.

    Wachau

Melissa in the austrian wine valley by the Danube.

    Dürnstein

One of the rare pictures where we both are on it. The danube bike trail goes through many such small beautifull villages like this one. It was simply wonderful.

    Hinterhaus ruins

Melissa in front of the Hinterhaus ruins in Spitz where we stayed overnight. The castle was built in the 13th century.

    Melk abbey

One of the "must-sees" along the Danube in Austria. Far too many tourists for our tastes!

    Relics in the Melk abbey

This is the skeleton of an unknown holy person, all dressed up!

    In the train

The last 35 kilometers to Vienna we rode in the train with our bikes.

    Poppy fields

    Claus riding past poppey flowers.

    Hinterhaus ruins

Another view of the ruins. This time with Claus.

    Claus resting

Claus is resting during midday of our second day of the Danube bike trip.
