  • Ada Hayden Lake

The Ada Hayden Heritage Park Lake (aka Ames Quarry and Hallett.s Quarry) was actually two lakes before the city of Ames purchased the land and developed the park. Now the two lakes are connected, forming essentially one lake and boats can pass between the north side and the south side under a bridge. The pedestrian bridge however causes problems for sailboats, as one would have to take down any masts. The south side of the lake is larger with 83 acres but it does not have an accessible boat ramp. There is a gravel ramp but it.s off the bike path therefore it.s not suitable for most sailboats unless it.s on a dolly and one does not mind pushing it a bit down to the lake. The north part of the lake is 40 acres and has a boat ramp with floating dock by the large parking lot. There is also a shelter with modern bathrooms.

Obviously the lake is a bit small for our 19. Flying Scot, although it would be fun to take it out on the lake just as a joke. However, being right in town it makes the perfect lake to sail after work with 14. Zuma rented from ISU Recreation Services.
