XP Tip: File Permissions
File permissions are handled through the Security tab of the Property window. There
one can grand and revoke specific access right to specific people.
Unfortunately by default this tab will not be available. To make the Security tab
available follow the steps below. Note: File permissions work only on NTFS file
systems.
Window XP Pro:
In XP Pro one needs only to turn-off simple file sharing. To do so follow these steps:
- Open file explorer (WinKey-E)
- Select "Tools" from the menu bar
- Select "Folder options..."
- Select "View" tab
- Scroll to the end of the "Advanced settings:" box
- Uncheck "Use simple file sharing (Reccommended)"
- Click "OK"
Windows XP Home:
One can boot into Save Mode and change the file permissions there. A permanent but potentially
dangerous option is to install the Security Configuration Manager (SMC) for Windows NT 4. This
seems to work but I'm still wary with the fact that's a NT 4 and not XP software.
- Download the SCESP4I.EXE from
Microsoft
or from here
- Execute the executable and extract the files into a new temporary directory
- Right-click on setup.inf of the extracted file and choose "Install"
- After installation is completed reboot the computer
